Fun with fondant!

I was asked to make a cake for a friend's daughter's 4th birthday and came up with this. The instructions left me lots of play room. "Strawberry or raspberry filling, and 'Happy 4th Birthday, *****!'" I copied the lion from the party invitation and made him and all the polka dots out of marshmallow fondant. K and I have decided fondant is a lot of fun to play with because it' s like playdough. In contrast with regular fondant, this marshmallow stuff tastes great, so it gets eaten with the cake.K made a great little tag that read "Happy 4th Birthday" and we stuck it in the top of the cake with a paper clip we'd straightened and spiraled the end of; it looked like a cute little photo holder. I still need lots of practice, but I think it turned out pretty well for a first attempt. I'll be spending lots of time practicing on bigger cakes over the next couple of weeks, as I have 3 cakes for 100-110 people to produce.

Wow! You guys did a great job. I've worked with fondant before and it's tough just getting the colors perfect... so I'm way impressed.

Cake decorating is one of the few areas of cooking and/or baking that I have absolutely no talent for. In fact, I recently moved the goal of "Doing a really great job of decorating a cake. Only 'a' cake." to my Big Book of Impossible Dreams. Kudos on the great fondant work. The cake looked really cute. =)

Your cake looks grrrrreat! (I can't believe no one said that already.) I must agree with everyone else that you have mad cake decorating skills, but then again, what don't you have mad skills at?

Hey, Deb. I've missed you. I have so much in my head and heart about last week's events at Train the Trainers, and sometimes I wish I could share them all. I can't at this time but will release a little at a time on the blog or in emails. God is on the move (like Aslan? ha!), and I'm humbled daily by His graceful touch in my life.

And so, I still miss you. When are you stateside?

Debbie,
I think that cake looks like a real lion, and I personally would be afraid to eat it. So, good job on probably giving your kids nightmares, dreaming that the lion came back and ate them for trying to eat him up in the first place. You're kind of sadistic, truth be told! ;)

And apparently, I needed to make the comment twice.

Thanks, Melanie! I was going for realism, so I'm glad it worked!
